Co-Operative Rugby League Conference, Midlands Premier Division
Saturday 15 May 2010
The Warriors’ Derby jinx continued with this defeat at a warm and sunny Haslams. Despite a brave fightback from 22-0 down, the Warriors ran out of steam and fit bodies to subside to defeat.
Fielding a young side, the Warriors began well completing their sets but City struck first as Nathan Hazel stepped inside to score out wide. James Turner then grabbed the first of his four tries, scoring from a move that involved a suspiciously forward pass.
Turner then powered through the middle to grab his second and brother Mike did exactly the same a few minutes later. With Paul Worthington adding three goals, it looked like it would be a long afternoon for the Warriors.
However at 22-0, City seemed to think the game was over and the Warriors began to grow in confidence after Tom James stepped his way over for their opening try. Ben Phillips was unable to convert.
After Tristan Gill lost the ball over the line for City, the Warriors again made ground upfield on the back of some cheap penalties and a simple hit and spin move saw Dan Garbutt crash over. Andy Webster’s goal sent the Warriors into the break with renewed heart 22-10 behind.
Immediately after the resumption, the deficit had been reduced to a single score as Sam Goatley’s strength took him over the line, Webster adding the goal.
However, James Turner grabbed his third try of the day to restore City’s momentum and though Goatley danced his way over for his second try converted by Webster, City dominated the last quarter.
Depleted by injuries and with no fit players left on the bench, the Warriors conceded tries to Lewis Thompson and Liam Walter in a three minute spell before Turner crossed for his fourth score of the day.
The Warriors still produced some spirited and gutsy play. With Neys Schreiner in the sin-bin, the twelve men held out for almost the entire ten minutes before Luke Braddow crossed. During that period, Rob Jones produced a magnificent cover tackle to deny the flying Ed Worthington a score in the corner.
Gill collected City’s tenth try of the day in the final minute to hand the Warriors their third consecutive loss in Derby.
