BUCS SUPER 8 Student Rugby League

UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE 22 – 14 NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY

UGRL edged a tight game with Northumbria with a strong second half showing. After defeats against some of the stronger sides in the section, it was important that the side gained the points to keep their top four position.

The game split itself into four quarters. The first was controlled by Northumbria, the second was honours even while Gloucestershire edged the third and fourth.

Northumbria started strongly playing with pace and showing good organisation and they took the lead through the impressive second row Josh Taylor who ran a good angle close to the line to cross. Dave Townend converted.

Gloucestershire had a couple of half chances through Jake Collier and Josh Pettifer and it was Collier who levelled the scores after 14 minutes, racing through a gap to the line. Danny Poulton converted.

Northumbria took the lead again after 20 minutes, Chris Sant exploiting some sloppy marker play to scoot 35 metres to the line for a try that went unconverted.

The second quarter produced some end to end rugby but there was no further scoring as Rory Trow’s attacking kicks had too much depth and caused Northumbria few problems but Gloucestershire’s defence survived a stern examination before the break to go in just 10-6 down.

Gloucestershire came out of the dressing rooms with renewed purpose and levelled the scores in the second minute of the second period, Poulton ghosting through the line to score in the corner.

Ten minutes later, a penalty on the last tackle gave Gloucestershire field position and Mike Venn forced his way over for the try. Poulton converted to give Gloucestershire the lead for the first time.

The home side had dominated the third quarter but at the beginning of the fourth, Northumbria began to get on top and Daniel Mole finished a swift crossfield move in the corner. Townend was unable to convert to level the score and Gloucestershire held a narrow 16-14 lead.

However Northumbria seemed to tire and Gloucestershire finished the stronger without being able to convert the pressure they built into points.

As the seconds ticked down, Northumbria launched one last attack. However Townend’s high bomb was poorly directed and Alex Robinson fielded the ball and ran it back through the disorganised chase. Finding himself in the clear, he raced away to score and was mobbed by his teammates under the posts. Poulton converted to set the seal on an important win for the students.
