RUGBY LEAGUE MAKES ITS DEBUT AT RICHIANS
Rugby League breaks new ground this weekend with the first game to be played at Old Richians’ Sandyleaze ground. The match is a Co-operative Rugby League Conference Harry Jepson Trophy semi final tie between Blackwood Bulldogs from Wales and the West London Sharks.
The game is on Sunday 6 September with a 2.30pm kick off and sees the Sharks looking for their second consecutive Harry Jepson Trophy Final. Their opponents are making their first appearance at this stage of the competition and will be hopeful of success after enjoying an unbeaten season.
Welsh clubs have too often exited at this stage of the campaign and since Bridgend Blue Bulls won the trophy in 2005, no Welsh side has played in the final.
On the other hand, West London Sharks are old hands at this stage of the campaign, having defeated Valley Cougars at Chosen Hill last season and ended Bridgend’s long unbeaten run at Hemel Hempstead in 2004. However, they have yet to win the trophy after losing out to Widnes Saints in 2004 and Nottingham Outlaws twelve months ago.
Blackwood have a reputation for fast, open rugby league while West London pride themselves on their solid defence so something will have to give and with a place in next weekend’s final at Derby’s Haslams ground at stake, then the contest should be a fine one.
