QUARTER FINAL UPDATE

The Co-operative Rugby League Conference Regional Quarter Final between Greenwich Admirals and Devon Sharks will now be played in Portsmouth and not at Chosen Hill. This is because Portsmouth is deemed to be more central to the two teams than Gloucester.

The Admirals qualified by way of winning the London & South division with a nailbiting 24-22 win over Southampton Spitfires in the Grand Final, a late try securing the win in a typically close game between the sides finishing first and second in the table. The Admirals had finished top of the table with just one defeat – against the Spitfires – all season and were favoured to take the crown.

The Admirals will play Devon Sharks who ended the East Devon Eagles’ unbeaten season in the South West division Grand Final with a 36-18 win. The Eagles had won the SWRL Challenge Cup the previous week and were hot favourites for the title, but the Sharks produced a magnificent performance to upset the odds and take the South West title.

Neither side has tasted much success on this stage so the quarter finals will be a new experience for both of them. At stake is a semi final place on 6 September with the Grand Final taking place at Derby’s Haslams Lane ground on Sunday 13 September.

MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION FINAL TABLE:

Gloucestershire Warriors 12 4 0 8 252 410 -158 8
Telford Raiders 12 0 0 12 100 378 -278 0

Redditch Ravens withdrew from competition. Their record has been expunged.

History was made when three sides ended level on 16 points at the end of the regular season, the finishing positions being determined by their head to head record. Although Derby City had a better point’s difference – by one – it was Coventry Bears who were placed atop the standings by virtue of their performances against Derby and Bristol Sonics who take the third spot.
