Summer rugby league is back on the calendar. Gloucestershire Warriors begin the preparations for their eleventh season on Wednesday 26 March with their first pre-season training session.
The club are looking to welcome back many of the players who took them to third place in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference Midlands Premier Division last summer as they bid to go one better and contest the division final.
Seven days later, on Wednesday 2 April, the Warriors will be hosting a registration evening at their Chosen Hill home where the Warriors hope to welcome anybody interested in supporting the club whether it be as a spectator, player or volunteer to come and ‘meet the team’.
The 2008 fixtures will be formally announced and players and officials will be on hand to field questions and look forward to the summer’s challenge. The event kicks off at 7pm and concludes at 9pm.
On the field, the Warriors season begins on Saturday 26 April with a trip to Birmingham to face the Bulldogs. The following week, they host Nottingham Outlaws as part of the Cheltenham Rugby Festival, which begins with the Cheltenham 9s on Friday 2 May.
“This season marks the beginning of a new era for the club,” said Chairman, Chris Wilson. “The committee has been boosted by a number of capable and enthusiastic people and I believe the Warriors will be increasing their profile and moving up the rugby league hierarchy over the next few years. It’s certainly a good time to get involved in rugby league in the county.”
“We have already seen the commemoration of the 1908 All Golds by the unveiling of a green plaque in Cheltenham and we are really excited about the Cheltenham Rugby Festival, which will be launched on 2 May.”
The Warriors will be based at Chosen Hill for the 2008 summer season and Wilson is keen to stress the excellent relationship the two clubs have. “Chosen Hill have been superb throughout the eight season we have been there. It’s been a good relationship for both clubs and one we are happy to continue with.”
“We have some ambitious plans taking shape and we can’t wait for the summer to begin.”
The Gloucestershire Warriors new club web site is nearing completion but the county’s rugby league fans have a new source of information. The Gloucestershire County Rugby League web site recently hit the internet featuring information on all aspects of rugby league in the county from student rugby league to coaching and refereeing and from events such as the Cheltenham Rugby Festival to the county’s only club side, the Warriors.
It has attracted a lot of interest and positive feedback but why not see for yourself. The site can be visited at www.gloucestershirerugbyleague.co.uk.
Former Gloucestershire Warriors coach Dan Garbutt led his Oxford University side to their biggest ever Varsity triumph over Cambridge last week.
The Dark Blues hammered the Light Blues 38-10 in the PCubed Varsity Match at the Twickenham Stoop,
Producing some breath-taking rugby to run in seven tries to two to cut Cambridge's overall lead in the event to 15-12 with one match drawn.
After his side’s win, a delighted Garbutt said: “All year they’ve had that ability to attack. Our shape and execution were very good. The conditions were perfect for us tonight.”
