WARRIORS TO REGAIN MOMENTUM AT TELFORD

The Gloucestershire Warriors will look to pick up the momentum of their season with a trip to Telford Raiders this Saturday (kick off 2.30pm).

The Warriors remain in pole position in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference Midlands Premier division despite not playing last weekend. “We were awarded the points from the game,” said Chairman Chris Wilson. “But we would rather have won them on the pitch.”

“We wanted a game and were disappointed that we could not arrange an alternative friendly match. Training has been going well and I hope we can pick up from where we left off last week and prepare well for Telford.”

The Raiders have yet to win this season and were soundly beaten 52-12 at Coventry last weekend. Prior to that, they ran second placed Leicester close in their first game at their new home at Telford Hornets RFC, going down 18-14 after losing 44-12 in Derby.

“Telford have not had the results they have deserved this season. They could easily have beaten Leicester by all accounts and we need to treat them with respect as they have some good players”.

German international Paul Szehofner and Parminder Tutt are beginning to form a dangerous halfback pairing while the size and strength of Matt Evans in the pack gives them plenty of go-forward, which enables the half backs to direct play.

The Warriors’ record against the Raiders is good. In four meetings, they have yet to be defeated with big wins at Chosen Hill and hard fought 24-12 and 50-20 wins at the Raiders’ previous home at Oakengates. The sides last met in 2007, when the Warriors cruised to a 76-16 win at Chosen Hill.

The Warriors meanwhile hope to be able to select a strong squad for this weekend’s game. “We have a couple of new players up front and, hopefully, they will be able to show their skills on Saturday,” said Wilson. “We also have some pace out wide and if we can get the link between forwards and backs going, then we can be confident of getting a win.”

Several Warriors had a run out in Bank Holiday Monday’s Tri-Regional tournament, which was won by the South West. The West Midlands, coached by Karl Fearnley of Bristol Sonics, featured a number of Warriors in their squad. Though the West Midlands lost both their games, 30-18 to the South West and 22-18 to London & South, they performed well and several players should be in the selectors’ minds for the South of England squad.

Against the South West, Stephan Fourie and Ronnie Haines scored tries with Arron Leese kicking three conversions and Fourie also scored against London & South in the final game of the day when Matt Hurdle scored a try and kicked a conversion.
