CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE PREMIERSHIP, MIDLANDS DIVISION
Round 12 Summary 12 July 2008
Nottingham Outlaws maintained their undefeated record in the Midlands Premier division with a 42-10 win over Bedford Tigers at The Bay. The Outlaws opened an entertaining game strongly laying siege to the Bedford line and were rewarded with two unconverted tries from Ben Thornton and Will Thomas. The visitors held out until Paul Calland crossed for his 17th try of the season converted by Thornton for a 14-0 lead. Zander Peden maintained his try scoring run by pulling a score back for the Tigers but Oliver Crick crossed under the posts for Thornton to add the extras right on the whistle. The Outlaws soon got into gear in the second period, Thomas scoring his second try of the game goaled by Thornton and when Steve McKinney sped in under the posts after 55 minutes, again converted by Thornton for a 32-4 lead the home support began to celebrate victory. Tempers frayed as the match became scrappy and Thornton and Bedfords Cameron Allsop were sin binned for fighting. Two minutes later, loose forward George Strachan powered over followed after 73 minutes by Crick, Rob Brown converting, for a 42-4 lead. Bedford had the last word when Jake Wheeler scored just before the final whistle and Rob Ashton added the goal to give them some consolation.
Leicester Phoenix racked up their highest score of the season but it was not enough to avoid a 58-28 defeat by Derby City at Haslams. Mike Cody grabbed a hat-trick for the visitors while Darren Hersey did the same for the home side in a fast, open game that saw 17 tries scored. The hat-trick men exchanged tries in the opening few minutes but the rest of the half belonged exclusively to City who scored five tries in a 20 minute period from Bryan OGorman, Ian Gilmore, Dave Bussell, Harry Chmiel and Hersey. Daniel Polgieter replied for the Phoenix but Neil Collier crossed before the break to leave City 34-10 in front at oranges. Jamie Howe pulled a try back for the Phoenix at the start of the second period before Chris Buckley and Adam Wilson extended Citys advantage. Cody grabbed his second at three-quarter time and ten minutes later Hersey completed his treble as the scores continued to flow. Rick Davey for the Phoenix and player-coach Martyn Rothwell for City exchanged tries before Cody had the last word with his third try of the day just before the end. Lee Tague hit seven goals for City, Howe kicked one in reply for the Phoenix.
