CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE PREMIERSHIP, MIDLANDS DIVISION
Wednesday 09 July 2008
Following their win over Derby City last weekend, the Warriors have the bye in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference Midlands Premier Division and so will be kicking their heels while their rivals for the third play-off place do battle.
At Haslams, Derby City take on Leicester Phoenix looking to consolidate fifth place in the table. By their own admission, they did not play well against the Gloucestershire Warriors last weekend and a home game against the bottom side would be a good way to get back into form.
Coventry Bears travel to Birmingham Bulldogs looking for the win that would maintain the pressure on the leaders Nottingham Outlaws a week before the big showdown between the sides. The Bulldogs will be smarting from their 44-8 loss to Bedford last weekend and while they are a tough proposition at their Moor Lane home, the Bears should have too much firepower for them.
The game the Warriors are most interested in is the clash between Nottingham Outlaws and Bedford Tigers at The Bay. The Tigers gave the Outlaws their most competitive work out back in May when they went down by 36-18 in Bedford. With the Tigers looking for the win that would almost put paid to the Warriors’ play-off hopes and the Outlaws hit by some key absentees, a surprise could be on the cards. However, the Outlaws should still have too much for the Tigers but it may be close.
FORMER WARRIOR EARNS CALL UP
Hartpury College’s Ollie Bloom has been called up to the GB Student Rugby League Chairman’s XIII 21-man squad for their ground-breaking tour to Ukraine this week.
The former Warriors wing has been featuring for South London Storm and the Harlequins RL Reserve grade side this summer and his performances have brought him to the selectors’ attention.
The tour is to aid the development of rugby league in fledgling league-playing nations and the squad, traditionally known as ‘the Pioneers’, will play a ‘Test’ match against the Ukraine national side in Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, on Sunday (13 July).
On their return, the Pioneers will stop off in Riga for a game against Latvia.
Bloom’s selection is particularly noteworthy as he represents a University that does not field a rugby league team in the BUSA Student rugby League competition and he has taken up the game through the Gloucestershire Warriors.
CHOSEN HILL HOSTS MORE REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE
Gloucestershire Warriors’ Chosen Hill base will host the inaugural appearance of the West Midlands representative team when they take on the South on Sunday 27 July (kick off 2.30pm).
The side is likely to feature a number of Warriors players alongside those from Bristol Sonics, Telford Raiders, Wolverhampton Wizards, Coventry Bears, Birmingham Bulldogs, Redditch Ravens and Swindon St George.
The side is coached by Bristol Sonics duo Dom Swann and Karl Fearnley and the match is a stepping stone towards the Regional Tournament next season as well as a chance for players to push for further representative honours this season.
