CO-OPERATIVE RUGBY LEAGUE CONFERENCE PREMIERSHIP, MIDLANDS DIVISION

Wednesday 4 June 2008

The Gloucestershire Warriors visit Coventry in this weekend’s Co-operative Rugby League Conference Midlands Premier division fixture looking to pick up the pieces of a season that threatens to fizzle out.

Having lost at Derby before a week’s break, the Warriors were unable to raise a side for their last game at Bedford but coach Tom James remains positive. “I was gutted last week that we were unable to go to Bedford. Everybody at the club was disappointed but we have to put that behind us now and concentrate on beating Coventry this weekend”.

The Bears tasted league defeat last weekend for the first time in nearly two years and will be looking to get their title challenge on track at Old Coventrians. The Warriors gave the Bears two tough challenges as the Midlanders romped to the Midlands Premier title last season, losing 26-8 at Chosen Hill and 30-16 in Coventry.

With both sides looking to bounce back from disappointment last week, it should be a tight game though the Warriors have yet to beat Coventry’s first team in four attempts and will have to turn the form book around to do so this weekend.

“We performed well against them last season”, said James: “And we hope to do the same again this time out. The club has a little pride to restore and a win on Saturday will certainly do that”.

The match kicks off at 2.30pm and the referee is John Butler.

Leicester draw breath with the bye this weekend and the other fixtures in the division see new league leaders Nottingham Outlaws travel to Birmingham to face the Bulldogs who will be on a high after securing their first win of the season over Leicester Phoenix last weekend. The Outlaws’ win over Coventry that took them to the top of the table was their first over the Bears in four attempts and they will be strongly fancied to maintain their position. However, the Bulldogs are a difficult side to play against and the Outlaws are sure not to have things all their own way.

There is an intriguing clash at Haslams this weekend as Derby City entertain Bedford Tigers. Both sides are on the fringes of the play-off picture and will be keen to gain the points to cement their position a little more. Neither side played last week so they will both be fresh and ready for what is the day’s most difficult game to call.
