Midlands Premier Division Summary Round 2

All,

Thanks very much for your prompt contribution of match reports from your matches. The summary follows. Scorers and other details will be compiled early in the week owing to Millennium Magic!

Bedford Tigers made an incredible debut in the Midlands Premier, racking up exactly a century without reply against the hapless Leicester Phoenix.

The Phoenix struggled to cope with a rampant Tigers outfit who racked up 18 tries, Chris Potts booting 14 goals.

After a circumspect opening, the Tigers began to dominate all areas of the game, with Zander Pedan opening the scoring with the first of his four tries. Fellow Australian Pritchard (twice), Rob Ashton and Sam Richbell soon followed him over the try line and Trevor Mudokwani and Jamie Goss also scored before half time to leave the Phoenix floundering 38-0 down.

There was no respite in the second period as the Tigers scored at will. Pedan and Rich Sinclair collected hat-tricks, Goss (twice), Richbell, Matt Hughes and Jamie Stead all added to a calamitous day for the Phoenix.

With Coventry Bears having the bye, Nottingham Outlaws took the early initiative in the division with a 42-14 win over Gloucestershire Warriors at Chosen Hill.

Three tries from kicks in the opening quarter from Martin Edwards, Ben Thornton and Paul Calland and two Thornton conversions had them 16-2 ahead.

Arron Leese collected a penalty and converted Steve Barnes’ try just before the interval to give the Warriors hope but tries from Roy Yorke, Chris McNamara and Edwards with a Thornton conversion eased the Outlaws 30-8 ahead.

Alan Bryan pulled a try back, converted by Leese but Calland and Thornton added converted tries to secure the win.

Derby City came back from 22-6 down to stun Birmingham Bulldogs with a 29-22 win in the early kick off at Moor Lane thanks to 21 points from stand off Paul Worthington.

Two tries from Mike Jones and one from Adam Smith had the Bulldogs seemingly in command but crucially none was converted and Worthington converted his first try to halve the deficit.

Rich Morris and Adam Walker added further tries, Gareth Harcome converting one for a healthy 22-6 lead. However, an Ian Gilmore try converted by Worthington ate into that lead before the interval and when Jon Cartlege crossed after it, the Bulldogs’ nerves were jangling.

Worthington’s conversion of his second try levelled the scores before he added a field goal to edge City in front. With time running down, Worthington sealed the comeback with his third try, which he naturally converted for City’s opening win of the season.
