Gloucestershire Warriors open their home campaign in the 2008 Co-operative Rugby League Conference Midlands Premier division with a tasty looking encounter with Nottingham Outlaws.
Runners up in the division last season, the Outlaws defeated the Warriors twice last season in Nottingham but lost an exciting encounter in terrible conditions at Chosen Hill 26 - 18.
That was one of our best performances of last season reflects Warriors coach Tom James but we need to repeat it to get the points this week.
Both the Warriors and the Outlaws won their opening games of the season last week and while the Warriors were battling past Birmingham 32-26, the Outlaws were cruising to a 56-4 win over Leicester Phoenix with their new signing from Derby City, Ben Thornton scoring 18 points from three tries and three goals.
Thornton racked up over a century of points for City last season and scored twice in Derby’s game at Chosen Hill so he will be a player to watch as will loose forward Rob Brown.
Brown was awarded the RLC Player of the Year title last season for his outstanding form throughout the campaign and he started well against he Phoenix with three conversions that allowed the Outlaws to establish an early dominance in a potentially tricky fixture.
The Warriors will again leave naming their side until later in the week with players nursing bumps and bruises from what was a tough game in Birmingham. There are also players likely to be in action in midweek and weekend cup finals such as Warriors’ Man of Steel last season, Ben Constantine who ran hat-trick hero Stephan Fourie close for the match honours last week.
The match will bring down the curtain on the Cheltenham Rugby Festival and with plenty of interest already being shown in the game and the Cheltenham Nines the previous day it looks to have been an extremely successful venture for rugby league in the county.
The game will take place at Chosen Hill RFC, Brookfield Road and kicks off at 2.30pm. The referee will be Steve Davis.
