LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED


The University of Gloucestershire will carry the county’s standard into the Cheltenham Nines at the Prince of Wales Stadium this Friday (kick off 6pm) and they will be up against a strong line-up of sides determined to be the first to lift the All Golds Cup.

The might of the military game will be on show as teams from the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force will be present as will the Police Sport UK side that has won the Archbishop Dolben Cup in the York 9s for the last two years.

Representing the Co-operative Rugby League Conference are the Midlands Premier division Champions and Grand Final runners up Carvell Coventry Bears as well as a relatively new side, the Farnborough Falcons who play in the RLC Regional leagues.

Keeping the student theme, Leeds Trinity Titans fresh from their triumph in a similar event in Rimini, Italy will hope to be the top dons at the event as the bid for a double.

The draw is split into two pools of four sides with the top two sides at the end of the round-robin phase going through to the semi finals. Each pool contains two of the services sides, one of the RLC teams and a student side against each other and matches will be played on both of the pitches at the Prince of Wales Stadium.

Richard Bailey Memorial Rugby Union Sevens Plate winners St Edwards aim for a double at rugby league as they head the cast of the inaugural 1908 Cup at the Cheltenham Rugby Festival this Friday.

Eight County schools will do battle for the prestigious trophy and the chance to be crowned rugby league nines champions.

The event sponsored by the Cheltenham Borough Council and the Cheltenham Tourist Office supported by the Gloucestershire County Rugby League has teams from Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Stroud.

Year 8 pupils from St Edwards are joined by Pittville School, Christ College, Bournside, Cleeve and there are entries from Winchcombe, Tewkesbury and Archway in what is sure to be a tremendously well contested event.

The teams are split into three pools, the pool winner and best runner up contest the 1908 Cup while the four next best teams battle for the 1908 Plate.

The 1908 Cup will be played on the second pitch at the Prince of Wales. and the action begins at 1pm. Entry to the event is £5 for adults and £1 for children and there is ample free parking by the Prince of Wales Stadium.
