It’s not every day you get to hold a professional sports trophy - but that’s what happened when the Rugby League Engage Superleague Trophy came to ChristCollege.
League Representatives Lionel Hurst and John Huxley displayed the trophy to awe struck pupils in advance of the Cheltenham Rugby Festival on May 2nd and the Millennium Magic Superleague weekend in Cardiff on the 3rd and 4th of May.
Christ College will be fielding a team of Year 8 students at the Cheltenham Rugby Festival, where they are playing for the 1908 Cup on Friday afternoon at the Prince of Wales Stadium.
The students also had a chance to be photographed with the same Trophy that has been held aloft by such legendary League players as Rob Burrow, Brent Webb and Gloucester Rugby Union star Lesley ‘The Volcano’ Vainikolo.
Mr Hurst said; “It was great fun. The selection of ChristCollege to display the famous trophy proved to be an inspired one. The warmth of the welcome and the friendliness of both staff and pupils alike made it especially memorable.”
The Superleague Trophy is made of solid silver and weighs approximately 10kg, and is currently held by the Leeds Rhinos.
